CERTIFICATION

EN 13432:2000 is a European standard that sets the criteria for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation. It defines the conditions under which packaging materials can be treated as biodegradable in industrial composting facilities. The standard applies to all packaging and packaging components made from biodegradable materials including plastics to fillers.

This standard ensures that packaging breaks down during composting without causing harm to the compost or environment. It evaluates biodegradability and the presence of heavy metals or hazardous substances. EN 13432 is widely referenced by manufacturers and certifying bodies when verifying compostable packaging.

MATERIALS

PLA Lined Paper

Made with a PLA Lining/Coating

A PLA Lining/Coating is used to make containers waterproof, so that beverages and foods do not leech into the paper. This ensures the conatiner retains it's strength and shape.

PLA is a compostable bioplastic derived from plant sugars. PLA stands for polylactic acid. It can be made from any sugar, such as corn starch, cassava, sugar cane, or sugar beet.

Plants are milled to extract the starch, in the form of glucose. The glucose is then fermented to produce lactic acid. Next up, a chemical process transforms the lactic acid into a polymer, which can be made into pellets, known in the industry as resin.

Just like a conventional plastic resin, the PLA pellets can be used in a variety of ways – extruded into a sheet or film, injection moulded, cast into sheets, or spun into fibres. PLA has a huge range of applications.

PLA has a low melt point, so is best for cold use up to around 40ºC or 105ºF.

PLA products are suitable for industrial/commercial composting.

More about PLA

  • Biodegradability: PLA breaks down into harmless substances within a relatively short timeframe, reducing landfill waste.
  • Compostability: When properly processed, PLA can be composted, returning nutrients to the soil.
  • Renewable Resource: Derived from renewable sources, PLA reduces dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Sustainability: Consumers increasingly value eco-friendly products. PLA packaging can enhance brand perception and appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.
  • Safety: PLA is considered safe for food contact and meets regulatory standards.

What does Commercially Compostable mean?

Pakchain's compostable range of products are commercially compostable - this means they will break down entirely in under 12 weeks in an industrial composting facility.

If organics/industrial compost collections are available this means your Pakchain cup, lid, plate, fork & napkin can all be disposed of alongside your leftover chips.

Find out more here.

What does Home Compostible mean?

Pakchain's home compostable range of products are designed to break down into organic matter in home compost piles. This means it can be safely added to a backyard compost bin or pile and will decompose naturally, without leaving behind harmful residues. All Home Compostable products are also suitable for Commerical Composting.

Are Pakchain products microwave / freezer safe?

Pakchain's disposable catering supplies are all designed with same day / immediate foodservice in mind, not for long-term use.
