CERTIFICATION
Certified commercially compostable to the Australian Standard AS 4736 by the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA), where facilities exist.
AS 4736 certification confirms that products:
- Biodegrade during commercial composting
- Disintegrate within the composting process
- Leave no harmful residues in the finished compost
Products covered under this certification are independently verified by the ABA and listed under the relevant Certificate of Conformance.
Please refer to the product-specific certificate below for full certification details.
These products are designed for commercial composting facilities and are not suitable for home compost systems.
Compostable in commercial composting facilities where accepted. Check locally as facilities may not exist in all areas.
MATERIALS
Made with CPLA
CPLA is the crystallised form of PLA.
PLA is a compostable bioplastic derived from plant sugars. PLA stands for polylactic acid. It can be made from any sugar, such as corn starch, cassava, sugar cane, or sugar beet.
Plants are milled to extract the starch, in the form of glucose. The glucose is then fermented to produce lactic acid. Next up, a chemical process transforms the lactic acid into a polymer, which can be made into pellets, known in the industry as resin.
Just like a conventional plastic resin, the PLA pellets can be used in a variety of ways – extruded into a sheet or film, injection moulded, cast into sheets, or spun into fibres. PLA has a huge range of applications.
As PLA has a low melt point, it is best for cold use up to around 40ºC or 105ºF. Where more heat resistance is needed, such as in cutlery and coffee cup lids, we use a crystallised form known as CPLA. This involves adding chalk to the PLA to act as a catalyst, and then rapidly heating and cooling the PLA resin during production. The result is a product which is heat stable to 90ºC or 194ºF.
PLA and CPLA products are suitable for industrial/commercial composting.
More info
Does CPLA breakdown?
Does CPLA breakdown?
- Biodegradability: CPLA breaks down into harmless substances within a relatively short timeframe, reducing landfill waste.
- Compostability: When properly processed, CPLA can be composted, returning nutrients to the soil.
- Renewable Resource: Derived from renewable sources, CPLA reduces dependence on fossil fuels.
- Sustainability: Consumers increasingly value eco-friendly products. CPLA packaging can enhance brand perception and appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.
- Safety: CPLA is considered safe for food contact and meets regulatory standards.

What does Commercially Compostable mean?
Pakchain's compostable range of products are commercially compostable - this means they will break down entirely in under 12 weeks in an industrial composting facility.
If organics / industrial compost collections are available this means your Pakchain cup, lid, plate, fork & napkin can all be disposed of alongside your leftover chips.
